Remember the days when you couldn’t properly record what you saw on television? The demand for at-home recording became the subject of the videotape format war, with the Betamax brand of videocassette tapes debuting as a competitor. Betamax, pioneered by Sony, was considered direct competition to VHS, mainly by offering 250 vertical lines of resolution in it’s tapes. VHS offered only 240 lines of tape resolution.

The fight for Betamax in the format war wouldn’t be easy. Despite Betamax having higher resolution, their tapes were limited to only 60 minutes of recording time, making this format impractical for recording long-form content. Sony attempted to fix this issue by introducing “β2 speed”, which would increase the tape’s recording time by twice it’s original length but came at a cost of lower video quality.

The fate of Betamax was sealed long before its production ceased. Sony’s refusal to license the formant, as opposed how widely VHS was licensed, made Betamax more expensive and out of public view. Sony eventually gave up on its success, implementing VHS models into their videocassette recorder products and letting their videotape format fizzle out. Betamax tape recorders would stop being produced in 2002, with the blank tapes also reaching its production end fourteen years later in 2016.
